The iPad Mini Finally Got Its Dream Screen — and a $699 Price That Ends the ‘Mini’ Part

All prices are US prices announced by Apple on October 26, 2026 — a snapshot as of today, subject to change. Performance claims are Apple’s own September 2026 test figures, not independent benchmarks.

What Apple actually announced

On October 26, 2026, Apple unveiled what it calls the iPad mini’s biggest update ever, and for once the superlative is mostly earned:

  • 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED (up from an 8.3-inch LCD), 1,200 nits peak brightness — more than double the previous model — 600 nits full-screen, 2,000,000:1 contrast, 1-nit minimum, in the same footprint thanks to bezels 24% thinner.
  • A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometre process, with a 7-core GPU carrying Neural Accelerators in every core. Apple claims up to 4.5× faster AI performance, up to 2.7× graphics, and up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU work versus the A17 Pro mini.
  • 5.4mm thin (down from 6.3mm) and, per Apple’s specs, about 255g for the Wi-Fi model (down from 293g).
  • IP67 water and dust resistance — a first for any iPad — rated for 1 metre of water for 30 minutes.
  • A 12MP Center Stage front camera moved to the landscape edge, an “Acoustic Display” speaker system built into the sealed body, Apple’s N1 chip (Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread), and the C2 modem on cellular models, claimed up to 50% faster than before.
  • Pre-orders open Wednesday, October 28; availability Friday, November 6, in 36 countries and regions.

That is a real generational jump: screen, chip, radios, cameras, durability, and industrial design all moved at once. The argument is not about the hardware. It is about the price — and about what the spec sheet hides.

The price: $499 → $599 → $699 in two years

MacRumors put the number in its headline, correctly: this is the mini’s second price hike this year.

iPad mini starting price (Wi-Fi, base storage)Price
2024 model at launch (128GB, doubled from 64GB at no charge)$499
Same model after Apple’s mid-2026 increase (memory/chip shortages)$599
New OLED model, October 26, 2026 (128GB)$699

That is +$200, or +40%, in two years — for the same 128GB of storage. The cellular model rose in lockstep, $749 → $849. Education pricing starts at $649. The full Wi-Fi ladder is $699 (128GB) / $799 (256GB) / $999 (512GB), and the new TechWoven Smart Folio is $79, up from $59 for the old folio.

One mitigation, honestly noted: the rumoured increase earlier this month was $200 over the then-current model. Apple charged $100. In the year of chipflation — the same memory squeeze that, as we report today, is forcing Samsung and Apple to cut phone component orders — a $100 step for a first OLED panel, a new chassis, and a sealed IP67 body is not extortionate on its own. What makes it sting is the stacking: the June hike bought existing buyers nothing at all, and this one arrives on top of it. The mini’s identity was “the small, relatively affordable iPad.” At $699 it now starts $50 below where the 11-inch iPad Pro once lived, and the word “mini” describes only its size.

The part of the spec sheet Apple didn’t announce on stage

Apple’s own tech-spec page, as MacRumors flagged within the hour, reveals that “A20 Pro” is two different chips:

  • 128GB and 256GB models: 5-core CPU (2 performance + 3 efficiency cores) and a single 16-core Neural Engine.
  • 512GB model ($999): 6-core CPU (2 + 4) and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine — 32 neural cores — plus more than double the unified memory bandwidth, per Apple’s press release.

All three share the same 7-core GPU. Separately, the nano-texture glass option exists only on the 256GB and 512GB models.

Chip binning tied to storage tiers is not new for Apple, but it deserves to be said plainly: the customer who pays $699 for the headline product does not get the headline chip. The performance gap will likely be invisible in reading and browsing — the mini’s actual jobs — and very visible in exactly the on-device AI workloads Apple spent its press release promoting (local LLMs, Draw Things, Detail are Apple’s own examples). If you are buying this mini for on-device AI, the honest entry price is not $699. It is $999.

The range narrowed elsewhere too: four finishes became two — Midnight and Starlight. And Touch ID remains in the top button; there is still no Face ID, on a $699 tablet, in 2026.

The verdict

Buy the screen, not the storage. The OLED panel, the 5.4mm sealed body, and the landscape camera fix every long-standing mini complaint in one generation, and pilots, clinicians, field workers, and one-handed readers — Apple’s own named users — will feel the IP67 rating and 1-nit floor more than any benchmark. For them, $699 is defensible.

For everyone else, the math has changed. The previous A17 Pro mini is already being discounted below its $599 list (HotHardware noted $559 at Amazon today), and it still does everything a small tablet was for. The new model’s premium is real but narrow — unless your workload is on-device AI, in which case Apple has quietly moved the real product to $999 and the $699 model is the decoy.

That tiering, more than the $100, is the story of this launch: in a shortage year, even Apple’s smallest tablet now sorts its buyers by how much silicon they can afford.
